Augusto C. Sandino International Airport is Nicaragua's main international airport, serving Managua and the wider region. Originally inaugurated as Las Mercedes Airport in 1968, it was later renamed in honour of the Nicaraguan national hero and now handles the majority of the country's domestic and international air traffic.
The airport is located approximately 11 km east of central Managua and is connected to the capital by the six-lane Carretera Norte highway. A single passenger terminal building accommodates domestic and international operations, with departures on the upper level and arrivals on the lower level.
