About Agaun Airport
Agaun Airport (IATA: AUP, ICAO: AYAG) is a small domestic airstrip serving the remote mountain community of Agaun in Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province. Set at roughly 975 metres above sea level in the Owen Stanley Range, it provides the settlement's main air link in an area without a formal road network.
Located about 125 km from Alotau, the provincial capital, the airport is reached primarily by light turboprop aircraft. Mission and charter flights, including aircraft such as the PAC P-750 XSTOL used by Mission Aviation Fellowship, connect Agaun with Gurney Airport at Alotau and, via Alotau or Port Moresby, with the rest of the country.
The airport has a single unpaved runway of approximately 909 metres and a small terminal with basic seating and a simple administrative area. Passenger handling is manual and minimal, with no jet bridges, automated baggage systems, shops or ATMs; travelers are advised to carry cash and confirm schedules with their operator.
Because road access is extremely limited, the airstrip is essential for medical supplies, emergency evacuations, government services and everyday travel in this isolated part of Milne Bay Province.
