About Samarqand
Samarkand is one of Central Asia's oldest and most storied cities, a Silk Road crossroads and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known in Uzbek as Samarqand, it is closely associated with Amir Temur and the Timurid Empire, whose monuments still shape the city's skyline.
The city's history stretches back more than 2,700 years to ancient Afrasiab. Its most famous ensemble is Registan Square, framed by the Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori madrasas, while the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis and the vast Bibi-Khanym Mosque reflect Timurid architecture at its height.
Beyond the monuments, the old town around Registan leads to the lively Siyob Bazaar, while the newer Russian-era district west of the historic core has wide, tree-lined boulevards, parks, hotels and restaurants. Visitors can explore the Ulugh Beg Observatory, museums and craft workshops, or wander the traditional mahallas.
Samarkand is also a growing regional hub for tourism, conferences and international events, supported by Samarkand International Airport and high-speed rail links. Its bazaars, teahouses and plov houses, together with a year-round calendar of festivals, give the city a distinctive local character.
For both leisure and business travelers, Samarkand offers an unusually direct encounter with Silk Road history alongside modern hotels, event venues and improving infrastructure, making it one of Uzbekistan's most rewarding destinations.
