About Navoiy
Navoiy is an industrial and administrative centre in central Uzbekistan, founded in 1958 as a planned city and named after the poet Alisher Navoi. It is the capital of Navoiy Region and one of the country's youngest cities, set on the Zarafshan River roughly 360 kilometres from Tashkent. The city's identity is closely tied to industry. Navoiy grew around the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat, which processes gold and uranium from surrounding deposits, and the area remains a major production and logistics hub. Despite its modern layout, the wider region has deep history. Nearby sites include the 11th-century Rabat-i Malik caravanserai and its Sardoba water reservoir, the Deggaron Mosque, and the Sarmysh gorge, where thousands of petroglyphs are carved into rock. In town, visitors can stroll Khalklar Dustligi Avenue, relax in Alisher Navoi Park, and see the Hazrat Alisher Navoi Mosque and St. Sergius of Radonezh Church. Neighbourhoods are organised around wide avenues and parks rather than historic quarters, with the central area near Khalklar Dustligi Avenue concentrating hotels, cafés and shops. Local dining centres on pilaf made with devzira rice, plus manti, shurpa and grilled kebabs, while dried fruits and regional crafts are common souvenirs. Navoiy appeals to business travellers for mining, industrial and logistics interests, and to leisure visitors as a gateway to the Kyzylkum region and Silk Road-era sites. Its calm, walkable centre and proximity to Samarkand and Bukhara make it a practical stop on longer Uzbekistan itineraries.
