About Kolda

Kolda is the capital of Senegal's Kolda Region and the main town of Haute Casamance, a rural southern area between the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Known as the heart of the Fouladou, it is a busy crossroads town where Fulani heritage, market trade and the Casamance River's tributaries shape daily life.

The town's identity is closely tied to the historical Fouladou kingdom and the 19th-century ruler Moussa Molo Baldé. Pulaar traditions remain strong here, and the Kankurang masked ritual, performed during initiations and ceremonies, is one of the area's most recognisable cultural expressions.

The centre is marked by the Grand Mosque and the lively central market, where traders sell produce, textiles and everyday goods. The sacred Moussa Molo Baldé tree remains an important local symbol, while nearby sites such as the Tâta de Moussa Molo Baldé at Ndorna and the large Diaobé regional market attract visitors from across the region.

Kolda is an agricultural and trading centre for cotton, groundnuts, cereals and livestock, and its position on Route Nationale 6 makes it a staging point between central Senegal and Ziguinchor in Lower Casamance. Administrative offices, schools and small businesses give the town a steady regional role.

For travellers, Kolda offers a practical base for exploring Haute Casamance, with markets, cultural traditions and nearby villages reachable by road. Business visitors and tourists alike use the town as a stopping point on routes through southern Senegal.
