About Kaolack

Kaolack is a busy commercial city in central Senegal, set on the north bank of the Saloum River about 190 km southeast of Dakar. It is one of Senegal's largest urban centres and a key trading crossroads in the country's groundnut-growing region, long associated with peanuts, salt and river trade.

The city grew around river and road transport and became an important groundnut collection and export point during the colonial era. Today its religious life is dominated by Médina Baye, a Sufi district founded in the 1930s by Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse; its grand mosque draws large numbers of Tijaniyyah pilgrims, especially during the annual Gamou.

The central market is one of West Africa's busiest trading hubs, with sections for cloth, food, household goods and produce. Around it, the riverside, the Grande Mosquée and older colonial-era streets show a mix of modern commerce and layered local heritage; nearby salt flats and the Saloum River add to the landscape.

Kaolack remains an economic engine for the region through trade, groundnut processing, salt production and transport. The N1 national road passes through the city, connecting Dakar with the south, which makes it a natural stop for road travellers heading toward the Saloum Delta, The Gambia and Casamance.

For visitors, Kaolack offers a more grounded Senegalese urban experience than the capital: lively markets, religious pilgrimage, river scenes and easy access to the Sine-Saloum region. It suits both business travellers involved in regional trade and travellers looking for an authentic stopover in central Senegal.
