About Montegiardino

Montegiardino is the smallest and least populated of San Marino's nine castelli, a compact medieval village set on a ridge in the south of the republic, above the Marano valley. Its quiet lanes, old stone houses and open views toward the Apennines give it a distinctly rural, unhurried character.

The village grew around a fortified castrum in the late Middle Ages. Reminders of that past survive in the castle gate, narrow alleys and the parish Church of San Lorenzo, whose present building dates from the 17th century and was renewed in the 19th century.

Montegiardino is best known as the home of the University of the Republic of San Marino, the country's only university, with residences and the Department of Economics and Technology in and around the historic centre. Nearby, the Monte Giardino forest and the gypsum outcrops along the Marano stream provide short walking trails.

Life centres on small community events, including the traditional Festa dei Santi Vincenzo e Luigi each May, while daily services are limited but welcoming. For shopping, dining and more choice, visitors use nearby Faetano, Fiorentino or the historic centre of San Marino on Monte Titano.

Montegiardino suits travellers looking for a calm base or a break from busier routes, with the Republic's main landmarks, the Adriatic coast around Rimini and the surrounding Romagna countryside all within easy reach by car.
