About Itapúa

Encarnación is the capital of Paraguay's Itapúa department and one of the country's most distinctive cities. Known as the Perla del Sur, or Pearl of the South, it faces the Paraná River directly across from Posadas, Argentina, and combines riverside recreation, border commerce and a strong regional identity.

The city was rebuilt and reshaped in recent decades after the Yacyretá hydroelectric project raised the river level. This transformation produced the Costanera, a long riverside promenade lined with beaches, palm trees, bike paths, cafés and viewpoints, and it has turned Encarnación into one of Paraguay's main summer destinations.

Around the centre, visitors find the cathedral, museums, shops and neighbourhoods that reflect the city's Jesuit mission heritage. Nearby, the UNESCO-listed Jesuit ruins of La Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangüe preserve some of the most important mission architecture in South America and are easy day trips from the city.

Encarnación is also known for its February carnival, one of the largest in Paraguay, which draws crowds for parades, music and street celebrations. The city's universities, agricultural trade links and growing tourism sector support business travel, while the San Roque González de Santa Cruz International Bridge provides a direct crossing to Argentina.

For both leisure and business travellers, Encarnación offers a compact, walkable riverside centre, beaches, cultural heritage and convenient connections across the Paraná into Argentina and along the routes of southern Paraguay.

Itapúa Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Summer from December to February is the liveliest season, with river beaches, the Costanera and the famous carnival in full swing, though it can be hot and humid. Autumn and spring bring milder, more comfortable weather for sightseeing and trips to the Jesuit ruins.

How to Get Around

Central Encarnación is compact and easy to explore on foot, especially along the Costanera. Local buses, taxis and moto-taxis cover the rest of the city, while rental cars are useful for visiting the Jesuit missions and other towns in Itapúa.

Where to Stay

Most visitors stay near the Costanera and downtown area for easy access to beaches, restaurants and nightlife. Mid-range and smaller hotels are concentrated in the centre, and the Argentine city of Posadas across the river offers additional options.

Food & Drink

Encarnación's food scene mixes Paraguayan classics such as chipa, sopa paraguaya and mbejú with river fish like surubí and pacú. Beachside kiosks, cafés and family restaurants along the Costanera are popular spots to eat, drink tereré and enjoy views of the Paraná.
