About Concepción

Concepción is the capital of the Concepción Department in northern Paraguay and a historic port city on the east bank of the Paraguay River. Known as La Perla del Norte, or the Pearl of the North, it pairs a compact colonial centre with a working riverfront and a strong cattle-ranching identity.

Founded on 25 May 1773 as Villa Real de la Concepción by Spanish governor Agustín Fernando de Pinedo, the city began as a military settlement guarding against Portuguese expansion. It later grew into an important river port for yerba mate, timber and cattle, and its story includes occupation during the War of the Triple Alliance and aerial attacks during the Chaco War.

The walkable centre is built around Avenida Agustín Fernando de Pinedo, Presidente Franco and the river. Key sights include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Plaza de la Libertad, the open-air industrial museum and the Museo del Cuartel de la Villa Real, along with colonial mansions known for their pillars and front galleries. The Monumento a María Auxiliadora stands more than 20 metres tall above the main avenue, while the restored old port remains a social and scenic focal point.

Cattle ranching, meat processing and river commerce anchor the local economy. Expo Norte in September showcases regional livestock and business, and the Festival del Río in late February brings sport, food and music to the riverfront. Around the city, visitors can fish, visit Chaco'í island beaches or stay at working estancias.

For travellers, Concepción works as a gateway to northern Paraguay and the Chaco. Route 5 connects it with Pedro Juan Caballero and the Brazilian border, the Nanawa bridge links it across the Paraguay River, and buses, private transfers and chartered vehicles make it a practical base for both business and leisure trips.
