About Amambay
Pedro Juan Caballero is the capital of Paraguay's Amambay Department and the largest city in the country's north. Set at about 607 metres above sea level, it is known as the 'Terraza del País' (Terrace of the Country). It faces Ponta Porã in Brazil across Avenida Internacional, forming a busy cross-border conurbation.
The city grew from a small settlement near the Punta Porã lagoon and took formal shape in 1899, when a police post was established on the frontier. Early economic life revolved around yerba mate processing and timber, later shifting toward commerce as the border crossing expanded. Today it is one of Paraguay's most important shopping destinations.
Landmarks include the Monumental Río Parapití stadium, home to Club Sportivo 2 de Mayo and one of Paraguay's largest football venues, which hosted matches during the 1999 Copa América. The nearby Laguna Punta Porã and shopping centres such as Shopping China and Shopping Dubai draw visitors and cross-border shoppers alike.
About 40 km away, Cerro Corá National Park preserves the site of the final battle of the War of the Triple Alliance and the death of Marshal Francisco Solano López in 1870. The park combines historical monuments, rock art, walking trails and natural viewpoints such as Cerro Muralla.
For leisure and business travellers, Pedro Juan Caballero offers border commerce, regional history, nature day trips and a growing hospitality scene. Its role as a commercial and logistics hub in northern Paraguay makes it relevant for trade, while the Brazilian border adds an international dimension.
