About Buskerud
Drammen is the largest city and administrative centre of Buskerud county in eastern Norway, set along the Drammenselva river about 40 km southwest of Oslo. Known as the river city, it combines a compact, walkable centre with views of forested hills and easy access to both the capital and the Oslofjord region.
Historically a busy timber, shipping and paper-industry port, Drammen grew from the old settlements of Bragernes and Strømsø on opposite sides of the river and was granted market-town status in 1811. Landmarks such as the wide Bragernes square, the neo-Gothic Bragernes Church and the restored riverside reflect its trading heritage, while contemporary regeneration has turned former industrial areas into cultural and residential spaces.
The city centre is divided by the Drammenselva and linked by landmarks including the Ypsilon pedestrian bridge. Bragernes, on the north bank, is the main shopping and leisure district, while Strømsø around the railway station is a transport and business hub. Visitors can explore the Drammens Museum with its open-air buildings, walk the river promenades, drive up the spiral tunnel to Spiraltoppen for panoramic views, or see performances at Union Scene and Drammens Theatre.
Drammen also functions as a logistics, port and business centre within the greater Oslo labour market, making it a practical base for corporate travel and events. It offers local ski slopes, hiking trails, cafés, restaurants and a growing cultural calendar, with Oslo reachable in roughly half an hour by train.
For both leisure and business travellers, Drammen offers a relaxed riverfront alternative to the capital, with good rail and road connections, regional attractions and quick access to the mountains and Oslofjord.
