About Toi

Toi is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, a small raised coral atoll in the South Pacific. It lies in the northern part of the island, about 17 km from the capital Alofi and roughly 2.4 km inland from the coast, connected by the island's main ring road. With around 32 residents recorded at the 2022 census, Toi is a quiet, close-knit village rather than a busy town, offering visitors a window into everyday Niuean life.

Niue is often called 'The Rock' because of its rugged limestone landscape, and Toi sits close to some of the island's most striking northern coastal scenery. A short road drops from the village toward Hikutavake, the gateway to Matapa Chasm, a sheltered swimming channel set between high cliffs, and the Talava Arches, a set of dramatic sea caves and rock bridges shaped by the Pacific Ocean.

Like other villages on the island, Toi reflects Niue's Polynesian heritage through its village council, church and community life. Traditional gardens of taro, bananas and coconuts, along with fishing, remain part of local culture, while the island blends that heritage with its status as a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand.

For travellers, Toi offers a calm base from which to explore the northern coast and its sea tracks, snorkelling spots and whale-watching lookouts. Between July and October, humpback whales migrate through Niue's waters, and the coastline near Hikutavake is one of the places where they can sometimes be seen. Most shops, restaurants, government offices and the airport are concentrated in and around Alofi, so Toi suits visitors seeking quiet, nature-focused stays within a short drive of the island's main services.

Toi Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Niue is warm year-round, but the drier, cooler months from May to October are the most comfortable for exploring. The July to October whale season is a highlight around the northern coast, while the wetter months from November to April bring higher humidity and a greater chance of cyclones.

How to Get Around

Niue has no public bus system, so visitors to Toi generally rent a car, scooter or bicycle in Alofi and follow the island's ring road north. Taxis and private transfers are also available, and many guests arrange a rental vehicle for independence while exploring villages, sea tracks and coastal lookouts.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is clustered around Alofi and the island's western coastal areas, with a smaller number of holiday homes and guesthouses near northern villages such as Namukulu and Hikutavake. Staying near Toi suits travellers who prefer quiet village surroundings within a short drive of Matapa Chasm and the Talava Arches.

Food & Drink

Niuean food centres on fresh fish, taro, coconut, tropical fruit and the local delicacy uga, or coconut crab. Cafés and restaurants are concentrated in Alofi, where regular markets sell local produce and crafts, while village stays and homestays often include home-cooked island meals.
