About Marlborough
Marlborough is a region at the top of New Zealand's South Island, best known as the country's leading wine-growing area and the home of the Marlborough Sounds. Its main towns, Blenheim and Picton, anchor a landscape that moves from sheltered valleys and vineyards to sunken river valleys, islands and quiet coastal bays.
Wine shaped modern Marlborough. Since the first commercial plantings in the 1970s, the Wairau Valley has become synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc, and cellar doors now stretch from Renwick through Blenheim. The region's food culture has grown alongside it, built on green-lipped mussels, salmon, olives and seasonal produce.
Marlborough's natural landmark is the Marlborough Sounds, a network of drowned river valleys at the top of the South Island. The Queen Charlotte Track, kayaking, dolphin watching and boat cruises make the Sounds a core outdoor destination, while Picton serves as the South Island gateway for Cook Strait ferries.
Culture and heritage add depth: Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre near Blenheim displays World War I and World War II aircraft, and museums in Blenheim and Picton trace early Māori and European settlement.
Marlborough attracts leisure travellers for wine, scenery and outdoor recreation, and business visitors for the wine industry, aquaculture, forestry and events. Its sunny climate, compact towns and direct ferry and air connections make it practical for short stays and touring.
