About Ayeyarwady
Ayeyarwady Region occupies the low-lying Irrawaddy Delta in southern Myanmar, where the Ayeyarwady River branches into creeks and wetlands before meeting the Bay of Bengal. Its capital, Pathein, lies on the Pathein River and serves as the region's main city and gateway. Often called Myanmar's rice bowl, the region combines riverine landscapes, farming towns and a long coastline.
Pathein, formerly Bassein, has a long trading history and is known for Shwemokhtaw Pagoda, a riverside Buddhist landmark. The city is also famous for hand-painted parasols, known as Pathein hti, made in local workshops, while delta villages preserve traditional crafts, monasteries and boat-based ways of life.
Beyond Pathein, the region's best-known attractions are its beaches: Ngwe Saung, a long stretch of quieter white sand, and Chaung Tha, a livelier and more affordable beach town. Delta boat trips pass villages, paddy fields and mangroves, and Pathein offers markets, pagodas and parasol workshops.
The region is central to Myanmar's agriculture and fisheries, with rice milling, fish processing and trade anchored in Pathein and delta towns. Seafood is a highlight, from beachfront restaurants to local markets, and Pathein is known for halawa, a sweet local confection. Nightlife is modest and concentrated mainly in the beach towns and Pathein.
For leisure travellers, Ayeyarwady offers a slower, less crowded alternative with beaches, river trips and cultural sights. For business travellers, its role in rice, fisheries and regional trade makes Pathein and the delta relevant, with road connections from Yangon and domestic flights to Pathein Airport.
