About Rabat-Salé-Kénitra
Rabat is Morocco's capital and a coastal city at the mouth of the Bouregreg River, facing Salé across the water. Known for its green avenues, government institutions and calm atmosphere, it combines a modern administrative centre with a well-preserved medina that forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city's landmarks trace a long history, from the Almohad-era Hassan Tower and the ruins of its unfinished mosque to the white-and-blue Kasbah of the Udayas and the Roman and medieval ruins of Chellah. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Royal Palace and the fortified medina walls reflect Rabat's role as Morocco's political and ceremonial capital.
Different neighbourhoods give the city variety: the historic medina and Kasbah near the river, the European-built centre ville with Art Deco and colonial architecture, upscale residential areas such as Hay Riad and Souissi with embassies and offices, and lively districts like Agdal with cafés, shops and restaurants.
Rabat is also a centre for government, diplomacy, higher education and international organisations, with business, conferences and public institutions concentrated in the capital region. Its museums, including the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, gardens such as the Jardin d'Essais, and the riverside marina and cultural venues add to the appeal.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Rabat offers a more relaxed alternative to larger Moroccan cities while remaining connected by tram, rail and the nearby Rabat–Salé Airport.
