About Ralik

The Ralik Chain is the western island chain of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a scattered group of low-lying coral atolls and islands stretching northwest to southeast across the central Pacific. The name Ralik means sunset, and the chain includes about 15 atolls and 3 islands, among them Kwajalein, Enewetak, Bikini, Jaluit, Namu and Ebon.

The chain's history combines traditional Marshallese voyaging and chiefly society with colonial and wartime chapters. Jaluit was an important German administrative and trading centre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and several atolls retain mission-era buildings, Japanese coastal defences and World War II wreckage. After the war, Bikini and Enewetak became sites of United States nuclear testing, a legacy that still shapes communities and travel access today.

Culturally, the Ralik Chain is strongly Marshallese, with a distinct Ralik dialect, matrilineal land customs, canoe building, fishing and copra production. Daily life on most atolls remains small-scale and village based, while Ebeye on Kwajalein Atoll is one of the most densely populated places in the Pacific and serves as a residential centre linked to the U.S. Army Garrison at Kwajalein.

Visitors are drawn mainly by remote lagoons, snorkelling and diving, especially the historic shipwrecks of Bikini Atoll and the marine environment around Kwajalein and Jaluit. Access is limited, with travel depending on domestic flights and inter-island ships, so the chain suits independent travellers and people interested in Pacific history, diving and traditional island life.

Business and international interest focus on Kwajalein's missile-testing and defence facilities, while government, shipping, fishing and development work support much of the rest of the chain. Although tourism infrastructure is minimal, the Ralik Chain offers a slow-paced and distinctive Pacific experience far removed from busier island destinations.

Ralik Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier season from December to April is generally the most comfortable time to visit the Ralik Chain, with calmer seas and less rainfall. Conditions remain warm and humid year-round, while May to November brings more rain and a higher chance of rough inter-island travel.

How to Get Around

Travel within the Ralik Chain relies on Air Marshall Islands flights, small boats and occasional inter-island ships, since the atolls are widely separated. Within inhabited atolls, walking and bicycles are common, and boats are used for travel between islets.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited across the Ralik Chain, with the main options around Ebeye, Kwajalein and a few small guesthouses on other atolls. Many visitors use Majuro as a base and arrange domestic flights or boat journeys to Ralik atolls.

Food & Drink

Local food centres on fresh fish, breadfruit, coconut, pandanus and taro, with imported rice and canned goods widely used. Dining options are mostly small family-run cookhouses, local stores and communal meals rather than formal restaurants.
