About Likiep

Likiep Atoll is a remote coral atoll in the northern Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands, made up of around 65 low-lying islets around a large central lagoon. The main settlement, Likiep village, is small and quiet, with a strong Marshallese identity shaped by generations of plantation and seafaring life.

The atoll is best known for its 19th-century trading history. In 1877, José deBrum and Adolph Capelle acquired the atoll from a local chief and developed it into one of the most productive copra operations in the Marshalls. Their legacy survives in the historic village and the Joachim deBrum House, a timber residence built in 1904–05 that blends German colonial and Marshallese building traditions.

Visitors can explore Likiep village, the deBrum House and its collection, island churches, and narrow islets fringed by reef and lagoon. The lagoon offers calm water for boating and swimming, and the atoll claims one of the highest points in the country at around 10 metres above sea level.

Tourism infrastructure is minimal and services are basic, so Likiep suits travellers who value cultural heritage, a slow pace and authentic island life over resort-style comfort. Reaching the atoll usually involves an Air Marshall Islands flight from Majuro to Likiep Airport, followed by a short local transfer.

Because it is small and remote, Likiep has limited business travel relevance beyond government, education and NGO work, but it remains an important historic and cultural destination within the Marshall Islands.
