About Saint Mary

Saint Mary is a coastal parish on Jamaica's north shore, bordered by St. Ann to the west and Portland to the east. Known for its green hills, rivers, quiet beaches and unhurried pace, the parish has Port Maria as its capital and chief town.

The area has a long colonial history. Spanish settlers established early communities, and the Battle of Rio Nuevo in 1658 was the last major Spanish-English clash on the island. Sugar plantations shaped later development, and Tacky's Rebellion began here in 1760. Fort Haldane, built in 1759 overlooking Port Maria, survives as a reminder of the colonial era.

Saint Mary is also known for its literary connections. Ian Fleming wrote several James Bond novels at Goldeneye in Oracabessa, while Noël Coward's hilltop home, Firefly, is now a museum with wide coastal views. James Bond Beach in Oracabessa celebrates that heritage.

Attractions include beaches, river rafting, ziplining and Castleton Botanical Gardens, as well as local markets and seafood cookshops. Towns such as Oracabessa, Annotto Bay, Highgate and Boscobel each offer a different slice of parish life.

For travelers, Saint Mary works as a quieter north-coast base close to Ocho Rios, with Ian Fleming International Airport at Boscobel improving access. Agriculture, fishing and a growing hospitality sector anchor the local economy, while the area increasingly attracts small meetings, weddings and retreats.
