About Papua Barat

Manokwari is the capital of Indonesia's West Papua province and sits on the Pacific coast of the Bird's Head Peninsula, overlooking Dore Bay. Known locally as 'Kota Injil' (Gospel City), it combines a compact provincial centre with rainforest foothills, mission heritage and a gateway to the Arfak Mountains.

German missionaries established the first Christian mission in Papua on Mansinam Island in 1855, and the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace stayed in the area in 1858, then known as Dorey. The town later developed under Dutch rule and was occupied by Japanese forces during the Second World War before becoming the provincial capital in 2003.

Across Dore Bay, Mansinam Island holds a landmark Jesus statue and historic church, while Pasir Putih beach offers a popular shoreline close to town. The Arfak Mountains nature reserve, Anggi Lakes and Gunung Meja forest provide hiking, birdwatching and cooler highland scenery within reach of the city.

Manokwari's districts spread around the bay and include government offices, markets, the University of Papua and Rendani Airport. Its role as the provincial administrative capital brings business and official travel, while the surrounding coast, highlands and mission heritage attract leisure visitors exploring western New Guinea.

Papua Barat Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Manokwari has a hot, wet tropical climate and rain is possible throughout the year. The calmer and comparatively drier months, roughly June to September, are generally the most comfortable for coastal trips, hiking and boat crossings.

How to Get Around

Shared minibuses known as angkot and motorcycle taxis (ojek) are common for short journeys, while taxis and rented cars with drivers suit longer trips. Boats serve Mansinam Island, and the compact town centre is easy to explore on foot.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster in the central districts around Dore Bay, close to government offices, restaurants and the waterfront. Simpler lodgings are also available near Pasir Putih beach and along the main roads toward the airport.

Food & Drink

Local dining centres on papeda, a sago porridge usually served with yellowfin tuna and grilled fish, plus sago-based snacks and fresh tropical fruit. Markets, simple warung eateries and small cafés offer the most authentic options across town.
