About Nagaland
Kohima is the capital of Nagaland, a hilly city in northeast India set along a ridge at about 1,400 metres in the Naga Hills. It is best known for the 1944 Battle of Kohima, a turning point of the Burma Campaign, and for its strong Angami Naga heritage.
The city's wartime history remains visible at the Kohima War Cemetery on Garrison Hill, where the famous inscription 'When You Go Home, Tell Them of Us and Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today' commemorates Allied soldiers. Kohima Cathedral, one of Nagaland's largest churches, overlooks the town, while the State Museum displays Naga crafts, textiles and artefacts.
Kohima's central Super Market and nearby lanes form the commercial heart, while residential hills such as PR Hill and Officers' Hill offer views over the valley. Just south of the city, the Naga Heritage Village at Kisama hosts the annual Hornbill Festival, and the Dzükou Valley and Japfü Peak provide popular trekking routes.
As the state capital, Kohima is a centre for government, education and regional trade, with roads linking the hills to the plains around Dimapur. Its modest conference and hospitality infrastructure supports official meetings, cultural events and growing visitor interest in Naga traditions.
For leisure travellers, Kohima offers history, culture, festivals and outdoor scenery, while business visitors come for government work, institutions and events. Both can use road transfers from Dimapur, the region's main airport and railway gateway.
