About New Valley
Kharga, also called El Kharga, is the capital of Egypt's New Valley Governorate and the main settlement of the largest oasis in the Western Desert. Set in a long desert depression dotted with date palms, the town combines a compact modern centre with vast open horizons, making it a calm gateway to one of Egypt's most remote regions.
The area has deep historical roots. Known to ancient Egyptians as the Southern Oasis, Kharga stood on the Darb El Arba'in caravan route that linked the Nile Valley with Sudan. That past survives at the Temple of Hibis, the early Christian cemetery of El Bagawat and a chain of Roman fortresses built to protect desert trade.
Central Kharga is focused around Gamal Abdel Nasser Street, where the Museum of the New Valley displays local archaeological finds and traditional crafts. Further out, visitors explore the mud-brick temple of Qasr Dush, thermal springs at Bulaq and Nasser El Thawra, and quiet palm groves that mark the edges of town.
Today Kharga is known for date production, renewable energy and its role as the administrative heart of New Valley Governorate. In 2022 the government designated it Egypt's first eco-friendly city, reflecting efforts to manage water, energy and green space sustainably in a desert environment.
For travellers, Kharga offers desert archaeology, oasis landscapes and a slower pace, while serving business and agricultural development linked to the New Valley project. Its remoteness is part of the appeal, with road connections to Asyut and onward routes to Dakhla and other Western Desert oases.

New Valley Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
October to April is the most comfortable period, with milder daytime heat that makes desert sightseeing more practical. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, so June through August is best avoided for outdoor visits.
How to Get Around
Kharga's central streets are walkable, while shared microbuses and taxis connect neighbourhoods and outlying villages. For temples and remote sites such as Qasr Dush or El Bagawat, a private car, driver or organised tour is the most practical option.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is in central Kharga, especially around Gamal Abdel Nasser Street, with a small selection of hotels and guesthouses. Staying centrally keeps restaurants, the museum and local transport within easy reach.
Food & Drink
Kharga is known for its dates, and local restaurants and cafés serve Egyptian staples such as ful, ta'ameya, grilled meats and rice dishes. Simple eateries and juice shops are concentrated in the town centre, while fine-dining options remain limited.
