About Corozal

Corozal is Belize's northernmost town and the quiet capital of Corozal District, set along the calm shore of Corozal Bay just south of the Mexican border. With a relaxed waterfront atmosphere, warm sunshine and a strong Mestizo and Maya cultural influence, it feels far removed from Belize's busier tourist centres.

The town grew in the 1840s when Mestizo refugees fled the Caste War of Yucatán, and much of it stands over the ancient Maya settlement now known as Santa Rita. That layered past is visible in landmarks such as Fort Barlee, the Corozal House of Culture and the compact historic core along the bay.

Visitors can walk the Santa Rita Archaeological Reserve on the edge of town, take a short boat ride across the bay to the Maya ruins of Cerros, or browse the Gabriel Hoare Market for fruit, food and local crafts. The waterfront, Four Mile Lagoon and nearby Shipstern Nature Reserve add outdoor variety without the crowds found elsewhere in Belize.

Corozal is also a working commercial centre linked to the sugar industry and cross-border trade with Mexico. The Santa Elena border crossing, Corozal Free Zone and the neighbouring Mexican city of Chetumal make it practical for business travellers, shoppers and residents, while beachside communities such as Consejo Shores and Orchid Bay have drawn a growing number of expats and retirees.

For leisure travellers, Corozal offers an affordable, low-key base for exploring northern Belize, while its border location and small airport give business visitors convenient connections to Chetumal and domestic flights to San Pedro and Belize City.

Corozal Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from December to May brings the most reliable sunshine and is ideal for exploring the bay, beaches and Maya sites. November and April are pleasant shoulder months, while June to November brings more rain and the hurricane season peaks between August and October.

How to Get Around

Corozal's compact centre is easy to explore on foot, and taxis wait near the market and bus station. Regular buses run to Belize City, Orange Walk and across the border to Chetumal, while a rental car is useful for reaching Santa Rita, Cerros and coastal communities in the district.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster in or near the town centre, close to the bay, market and bus terminal. Quieter seaside and residential options are found north of town in areas such as Consejo Shores and Orchid Bay, which suit longer stays and travellers seeking a more laid-back setting.

Food & Drink

Corozal's food reflects its Mestizo and Maya roots, with Belizean staples such as rice and beans, tamales, salbutes, panades, fry jacks and fresh seafood, often alongside Mexican-influenced dishes. Market stalls, small eateries and waterfront restaurants offer affordable local meals, with ceviche and other bay fish among the highlights.
