About Berry Islands

The Berry Islands are a chain of roughly thirty islands and cays in the northwestern Bahamas, about thirty miles north of Nassau. Often called the Fish Bowl of The Bahamas, the district is known for quiet out-island life, clear water and uncrowded beaches. Great Harbour Cay is the largest and most populated island, with the main settlement at Bullocks Harbour.

Settlement dates to 1836, when Governor Colebrook established a community of liberated Africans at Great Harbour Cay. Fishing, small-scale farming and boat building shaped the early island economy, and the Berry Islands still keep a slow, low-rise out-island character today.

Visitors are drawn to white-sand beaches, bonefish flats, coral reefs and protected anchorages. At the southern end of the chain, Chub Cay is a sport-fishing and marina hub near the Tongue of the Ocean, offering access to offshore game fishing, while boaters explore dozens of largely uninhabited cays.

The economy centres on fishing, yachting, marinas and private island retreats. Great Harbour Cay and Chub Cay both have facilities for visiting boats, and the district attracts anglers, sailors and travellers looking for seclusion within a short hop of Nassau and South Florida.

For leisure travellers, the Berry Islands offer beach days, snorkeling and world-class fishing; for business and private travel, marina services, charters and island logistics make it a practical out-island destination with a distinctly relaxed Bahamian character.
