About Misiones

Posadas is the capital of Misiones Province in northeastern Argentina, set on the left bank of the Paraná River directly opposite Encarnación, Paraguay. As the province's administrative and commercial centre, it combines a relaxed riverside lifestyle with Guaraní and Jesuit heritage. Its long Costanera waterfront, red-earth landscape and yerba mate culture give the city a distinctive character in the Argentine northeast.

Founded in 1615 as the Jesuit reduction of Anunciación de Itapúa and renamed in 1879 for Gervasio Antonio Posadas, the city keeps layers of colonial, river-port and modern history. Landmarks include Plaza 9 de Julio, San José Cathedral, the Government House and the Bajada Vieja, the old port district with the Piedra Fundacional and the Monumento a Andresito. The San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge connects Posadas with Encarnación across the Paraná River.

The Costanera runs for more than 10 km along the river, passing the Monumento a Andresito, river beaches such as El Brete and Costa Sur, gardens and an amphitheatre. Cultural venues include the Museo Regional Aníbal Cambas and the Museo de Bellas Artes Juan Yaparí. The historic Bajada Vieja contrasts with newer residential areas, offering markets, cafés and river views.

Posadas is a regional services, education and wood-processing centre with strong cross-border commerce and daily connections to Paraguay. Events such as the Festival Nacional de la Música del Litoral bring visitors to the city, which also works as a practical base for excursions to the Jesuit ruins of San Ignacio Miní and the Iguazú Falls.

For leisure travellers, Posadas offers riverfront walks, museums and easy access to the missions and natural attractions of Misiones. For business visitors, it is the provincial capital with government offices, meeting venues and hotels, and a gateway to the wider border region of northeastern Argentina.
